BRAVE: forbidden CINEMA
dir. Diego Quemada-Díez, Mexico/Guatemala/Spain 2013
A touching account of the journey of a few children from Guatemala who, in search of adventure and a better life, head north – to the United States – to fulfill their American dream. On the Mexican border three daredevils: Juan, Samuel and Sara meet Chauk, a Native Mexican from the Tzeltal tribe, who is heading in the same direction. Even though he does not speak Spanish, which arouses hostility in Juan, he manages to communicate with and befriend Sara. Their journey evokes a whole range of emotions in the children and there are also many dangers awaiting them. Will the four of them manage to reach the USA? Awarded at festivals in Cannes and Mar de Plata, The Golden Dream, is one of the most beautiful Latin American films of recent years. Director Diego Quemada-Díez paints portraits of the young protagonists with great charm and sensitivity, presenting at the same time a bitter picture of Central and North America as well as an insightful analysis of modern migration. It is a true film gem which everybody should see.
Movie in Spanish, Tsotsil, English with Polsih subtitles.
