Spear is an adaptation of a show by Bangarra Dance Theatre – an Indigenous Australian dance group. In its productions Australian mythology interweaves with the picture of the difficult everyday life of Indigenous Australian people in the 21st century. This is what the visually stunning film debut of the group’s leader, Stephen Page, is about. Its main character, Djali (performed by Australian film star Hunter Page-Lochard, the director’s son), is a young man whose childhood was deeply shaped by centuries-old Aboriginal tradition. He must cope with the hardships of coming of age in the modern world. Through his eyes we see the problems that have plagued the Indigenous community for years: from physical violence and alcohol abuse to feeling lost in a world which is equally far away from the past, present and future. A hypnotic, full of symbols, and nearly dialogue-less performance, accentuating the beauty of the human body and its movement, it illustrates the power hidden in stories transmitted orally. The power of identity built by generations, but also the fight to find one’s place in the modern world.
